OF THE ESCALES

ABOUT

Flight is an international company creating multidisciplinary, experimental theatre, performance, and film. Founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Sarah Calver, Flight collaborates with artists and communities to devise and tour original work across the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Our work is playful, subversive, political, and poetic - examining relationships, social norms, and structures. We're interested in the spaces between control and freedom, between who we think we are and who we're told to be and through our work we explore what it means to resist - and to succumb to - the forces that shape us.

We merge fiction and reality, drawing inspiration from the mundane, the absurd, and the beauty of the everyday, as well as the epic, the mythical, and the theatrical. We deconstruct narratives - subverting expectations, challenging the status quo, and amplifying underrepresented voices -  offering space and playtime for perspectives that are often unheard or overlooked.

Our work is a mash-up of physical and visual languages, drawing on movement and image, as well as clown and documentary. Non-linear and genre-blurring, it references pop culture as much as myth and mundanity. Our aesthetic is bold, silly, profound, surreal, and epic - a layered mix of styles, moods, and forms.

We are committed to reimagining how performance can be made and experienced. Our work increasingly responds to place, space, and people - often developed in collaboration with communities and shaped by the environments in which it’s performed. We seek new ways to invite audiences into the work - to not just witness, but to feel, question, and connect.

COLLABORATORS

We make original work through collaboration - with a core team of artists and an ever-evolving circle of performers, designers, production teams, and communities. Each project invites new voices into the room, building on long-term relationships while welcoming fresh perspectives.

Our process is improvisational, devised, and research-led. It unfolds over time through shared experiments, conversations, play and try-it-and-see. Less interested in fixed narratives and more in the collision of ideas, forms, and people - our processes offer space for thinking, questioning and exploring personal and intimate histories as well as the universal.
